To make the most of the sun and sea, it’s best to visit Sardinia between May and September. The sun is out and the water temperature pleasant. Sailboat rentals are very affordable outside the July and August periods, allowing you to discover the islands.
Sardinia is full of treasures to discover with the whole family. Here are the five must-do activities and places that will make your holiday a memorable experience for young and old alike.
Immerse yourself in Sardinia’s fascinating history by visiting some emblematic archaeological sites. At Nora, admire the Roman and Punic ruins of this ancient city built on a peninsula. The Nuraghe di Palmavera, one of the best-preserved nuraghi (prehistoric stone towers), will transport you back to the time of the mysterious Nuragic civilisation. Climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the Sardinian countryside.
The famous Costa Smeralda is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Sit back on the pristine white sands of Cala di Volpe or Capriccioli and enjoy the crystal-clear turquoise waters. Your children can have fun building sandcastles or trying their hand at water sports such as kayaking or windsurfing.
Put on your hiking boots and explore the sumptuous natural landscapes of the island’s interior. The Gennargentu mountain range, with its craggy peaks and lush green valleys, offers plenty of family-friendly trails. Take a break in picturesque mountain villages such as Orgosolo, known for its remarkable wall frescoes. On the coast, don’t miss the fishing villages of Arbatax and Cala Gonone.
For a total immersion in Sardinian traditions, visit an agritourism farm. Here you can learn about traditional methods of producing pecorino cheese and olive oil, and even take part in workshops. Finish off with a tasting of these delicious local products!
The crystal-clear waters of Sardinia are home to a rich underwater biodiversity for the whole family to explore. Put on your wetsuit and diving mask to swim among ancient shipwrecks, underwater caves and seabeds covered in posidonia meadows. Your children will marvel at the schools of multicoloured fish and the enchanting underwater landscapes.
Although Italian is the official language, Sardinian is still spoken by many islanders. Knowing a few basic expressions such as « Bongures » (hello) or « Istocumpremus » (delighted) will help you to establish a more authentic bond in your exchanges. The Sardinians will appreciate your efforts!
Rent an inflatable boat or kayak: Many Sardinian beaches have secluded coves accessible only by sea. A small inflatable boat or kayaks will allow you to explore these hidden gems safely with the kids.
Pack light hiking boots: Sardinia offers superb coastal and inland trails. Comfortable walking shoes for all the family will allow you to make the most of the island’s varied landscapes, even on short strolls.
